Celebrate 300 years of democracy with Annapolis by taking a tour of the Annapolis Historic District. Extending from the Maryland State House to St. John's College, Spa Creek and a portion of West Street, the district is a veritable treasure trove of architectural and historic must-sees. Even the street plan is interesting. Designed in baroque circles by Colonial Governor Francis Nicholson in 1696, one set centers on the State House and the other on St. Anne's Episcopal Church, signifying the separation of church and state. Buildings in the area date from as far back as the 1600s to the Art Deco-ed 1930s.
If you're interested in the city's African-American history (Annapolis used to be a slave port), drop by the Mount Moriah African Methodist Episcopal Church on Franklin Street. It has been the state museum for African-American history and culture since 1984. There's also the Banneker-Douglass Museum as well as a statue of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alex Haley on the City Dock.
In the mood for something more active? Why don't you try kayaking down one of Annapolis' many creeks or, better yet, sailing off into the sunset on a beautiful yacht?
