A Timeless City
The city of Annapolis has borne witness to many important events in its more than 300 years of existence. Battles, both literal and figurative, have been fought for it, over it and in it. Thousands of ships have been launched from its docks - and in 1774 one was burned in a fiercer version of the Boston Tea Party. Already a cultured city when other parts of the country were still struggling to establish settlements, Annapolis has had a long and storied past.
When you walk along the city's cobblestone streets and go down winding roads where 18 th century homes and buildings still stand, it's easy to feel disoriented and lost in time. (And when you get a glimpse of your very modern self on the glass of a shop window, you'll wonder why you're not wearing a wig.)
The site of many of the turning points in American history, Annapolis even served as the U.S. capital from 1783-84 when Congress convened here. It was also here that George Washington resigned as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army and where the Treaty of Paris that would end the Revolutionary War was ratified.
Annapolis is home to numerous historic landmarks like the Maryland State House, which is the oldest state government building that is still being used as such in the country. There's also the architectural as well as historical attraction that is the 18 th century mansion of Governor William Paca, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
When you own a piece of Annapolis, MD real estate, one of the good things about it is that it's like having a little bit of American history that you can call your own.
The "Paris" and "Athens" of America
At various times in its history, Annapolis has been referred to as the "Paris" of America as well as its "Athens" - and, no, it's not because it looks like either of those cities. Like Paris and Athens, Annapolis is a historically and culturally significant city, where the bright lights of the Colonial Era and the American Revolution used to gather, and where the brilliant minds and talents of today congregate.
Renowned for its wealth of educational and cultural institutions, as well as for its well-preserved buildings and natural beauty, Annapolis is as worth a visit (or two) as those internationally celebrated cities. Anapolis has beautiful vacation homes. And you can just imagine what it would be like to actually live here - if you own Annapolis, MD real estate, you'll have everything the city has to offer right at your fingertips.
Annapolis' most famous establishment is an educational, military and nautical institution. The U.S. Naval Academy, founded here in 1845, educates and trains officers of the United States Navy and Marine Corps. One of the premier institutions of higher learning in the country, its 388-acre campus is brimming with traditions, monuments and buildings dating back at least a hundred years. It has thus been designated a National Historic Landmark.
The Naval Academy has become very much identified with Annapolis that sometimes people use the city's name to refer to the institution. Annapolis is also home to St. John's College and the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, which houses the ballet company, the opera, chorale and the symphony orchestra.
